International Arts Carnival 2009: HKS McDull Music Project 4
Let’s learn more about Beethoven’s famous pieces with the piglet!
Hong Kong’s most adorable piglet McDull will return to “perform” with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and conductor Yip Wing-sie in the International Arts Carnival: “HKS McDull Music Project” this summer! The theme of this year’s project is how to learn music by heart and how to memorise a nice tune. Let’s see if McDull can make it!
A total of 6 performances will be held from 30 July to 2 August 2009 (Thu-Sun), 7:30pm, and 1 & 2 August (Sat-Sun), 3pm, at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall.
Tickets: $250, $180, $120
For aged 6 or above. (in Cantonese)
Featured Composer: Beethoven
Since his first Hong Kong Sinfonietta concert in 2006, McDull has grown very fond of Yip Wing-sie and the orchestra, whose music moves him so much. Using some ingenious ways, McDull will learn by heart the themes and characteristics of different musical work this Summer. He will in particular work on Beethoven’s symphonies, as the Hong Kong Sinfonietta is playing all nine of them this season!

Hong Kong Sinfonietta Music Director: Yip Wing-sie
One of Hong Kong’s flagship orchestras, Hong Kong Sinfonietta was founded in 1990 with a mission to bring music closer to the community. In April 2002, eminent conductor Yip Wing-sie joined as the new Music Director, adding to the orchestra’s vision – “investing in a cultural tomorrow”. Today, Hong Kong Sinfonietta performs over 80 times a year and has collaborated with an illustrious array of international musicians and groups including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Plácido Domingo, Augustin Dumay, Fou Ts’ong, Christopher Hogwood, Luciano Pavarotti, Pinchas Zukerman, The Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Kirov Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet.
Hailed as “one of the world’s great small orchestras”, Hong Kong Sinfonietta has been a regular guest at festivals at home and abroad. Its most recent overseas performances included concerts at La Folle Journée Festival in Tokyo (2006 and 2007), a début concert at the Shanghai Spring International Music Festival (2007), a concert at the prestigious National Philharmonic Hall in Warsaw and concerts at festivals in France and Lithuania (2005). This year, the orchestra has been invited back to La Folle Journée and will make its début at Festival Pianistico Internazionale Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli and Settimane Musicali al Teatro Olimpico in Italy.
Apart from standard orchestral repertoire, the orchestra ventures in crossover productions, new commissions and innovative audience development concerts for different age groups. The orchestra’s discography includes the “Master Chinese Composition Series” CDs on HUGO and This is Classical Music on DECCA.
