Michel Dalberto Piano
Michel Dalberto first came to prominence when, between 1975 and 1978, he won the First International Mozart Competition in Salzburg, Clara Haskil Piano Competition in Vevey and first prize at the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition. Born in Paris in a non-musical family which took roots in Dauphiné and Italian Piemonte, he began his piano lessons at the age of three and a half. When he was twelve, he was introduced to Vlado Perlemuter, a favourite pupil of the late Alfred Cortot, and entered his class at the Paris Conservatoire where he completed his studies in nine years.
He has performed under the baton of many renowned conductors including Leinsdorf (Orchestre de Paris), Sawallisch (Orchestre de la Suisse Romande), Masur (Orchestre National de France), Dutoit (Orchestre National de France and Montreal Symphony), Colin Davis (Amsterdam Concertgebouw), Andrew Davis (London Philharmonia), Inbal (Wiener Symphony and Radio Sinfonie Orchester Frankfurt), Temirkanov (Roma Santa-Cecilia) and Dausgaard (Oslo Philharmonic).
He has also performed at festivals such as Lucerne, Florence, Aix-en-Provence, Vienna, Edinburgh, Schleswig-Holstein, Grange de Meslay and La Roque d’Anthéron and has made no less than 15 visits to Japan.
As an outstanding chamber musician, Dalberto had played the ten Beethoven Sonatas with the late Henryk Szeryng and two-pianos recitals with the late Nikita Magaloff. More recently he has appeared with Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Lynn Harrell and Renaud and Gautier Capuçon. He also played duet with Boris Belkin, Vadim Repin, Nikolaj Znaider, Yuri Bashmet, Truls Mørk as well as with the baritone Stephan Genz.
From the beginning of his career, Michel Dalberto has been acknowledged as one of the foremost interpreters of the music of Schubert and Mozart. Liszt, Debussy, Fauré, Schumann and Ravel are also among his favourite musicians. He is the only living pianist to have recorded the complete piano works by Schubert.
Since 1991 he has served as Chairman of the Jury of the Clara Haskil Piano Competition which takes place in Vevey, Switzerland, every two years. He recently accepted the offer from Accademia Pianistica in Imola, Italy, to teach regularly to a selected number of outstanding students.
Also a keen sportsman, he skis in Savoy and Switzerland, where he lives, and is also an expert in scuba-diving and a devoted fan of Formula 1.
He has been awarded the Knight of the Ordre National du Mérite by the French Government in 1996.
