Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique
Tchaikovsky died just 9 days after the première of Pathétique; a suspected suicide. Intense and powerful, this brooding, last symphony of the great Russian Romantic composer is one of the most moving works in music history. Whether the composer intended it as his private suicide note, or his “testament of forbidden love” (the work was dedicated to one of the greatest loves of his life, another man), this symphonic masterpiece never fails to move its listener.
From Tao to Mozart: Two prodigies
Mozart composed the A major piano concerto K488 during the height of his career as a concerto pianist. The work is one of his most beautiful and sublime compositions, and is injected with life and vitality. A prodigy not unlike Mozart, Conrad Tao, currently in his mid-teens is already an internationally acclaimed piano virtuoso and a promising composer. Born in the USA in 1994, Tao gave his first public piano recital at age 4, made his concerto début at age 8, and has performed under the batons of such luminaries as Eschenbach and Slatkin. This 21st-century prodigy’s performance of the 18th-century prodigy’s famous concerto is not to be missed!
