Artist Associate

Hong Kong Sinfonietta first launched the Artist Associate scheme in the 2006/2007 season, with the aim to provide a platform for intensive collaboration with one or more artists during the season. While the Artist Associate works closely with the orchestra and the Music Director, new ideas are explored to expand the horizon of classical music. Hong Kong Sinfonietta's first Artist Associate, Ng Cheuk-yin, has built a close relationship with the orchestra in the past two seasons and will continue to do so in the coming season. Apart from the commissioned works including Up Among the Stars and Fly, he had provided music arrangements for several special projects, as well as showcased his talents as a performer in HKS McDull Music Project 2, where he acted as a gifted waiter of a Hong Kong-style cafe who sang, rapped and played the piano. Grainger Quartet from Australia visited Hong Kong several times since November 2006 to work with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Besides giving recitals, they played chamber music with orchestra members, played concertos with the orchestra as a quartet or soloists, played among the orchestra in concerts and premiered Angel Lam's In Search of Seasons, written specially for them and the orchestra. As experienced educators, the quartet also gave concerts and masterclasses at schools and universities in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Sinfonietta welcomes composer/multimedia artist Samson Young as Artist Associate of 2008/2009. Born in Hong Kong, Samson Young is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in composition at Princeton University under the auspices of the Naumburg Prize. In 2007, he became the first Hong Kong artist to receive the Bloomberg Emerging Artist Award. Young's compositions are marked by their consistent use of multimedia and new technology as a mean of enriching the concert hall experience. His creative outputs have been presented in festivals at home and abroad in Europe, Australia and the USA. He is the co-director of multi-disciplinary artist collective EmergencyLab.
